The development of new reagents for the replacement of toxic tin hydride species is proposed; the chemistry is based on asymmetric [H]-transfer from polymeric silanes promoted by new non-toxic tin catalysts. The proposal is based on a novel finding that a catalytic mixture of tin(II) triflate and chiral bis(oxazoline)pyridine catalyses the reduction of prochiral ketones by PMHS. Since the silane is non-toxic, readily available, inexpensive and unreactive to both air and water in the absence of catalysts our proposed process will compete with the best available methods. The reaction proceeds via a chiral tin hydride species. Unlike other processes that involve a tin hydride species, most notably tributyltin hydride, the tin species in our process (lacking any alkyl tin residues) is non-toxic and readily removed from the reaction mixture by filtration through a silica plug. The process is therefore a green or environmentally benign one.The factors influencing the enantioselectivity of the process will be studied. We will investigate its use as a replacement of tributyltin hydride, both in an asymmetric and non-asymmetric fashion by application to the reduction of alkyl and aryl halides; the Barton McCombie alcohol deoxygenation reaction; and as promoters of radical cyclization reactions.
