Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed research is a collaborative programme between Cranfield and Liverpool John Moores universities together with 7 industrial partners. The project will establish the thermal and physical threshold conditions for high efficiency deep grinding (HEDG) and hence develop a strategy to achieve damage free grinding at the highest possible stock removal rates. The programme will develop and validate thermal models for HEDG grinding and investigate the fundamental differences between HEDG, creep and shallow cut grinding and thus determine the transition region between creep and HEDG.The programme will develop techniques for improved methods of temperature measurement and will relate the temperatures generated to removal rate for the different grinding processes. Process conditions will be identified which give rise to low grinding zone temperatures whilst developing strategies for optimum cooling efficiency. The relationship between material removal rate and grinding power and force will be investigated using CBN and newer seeded gel forms of aluminium oxidor grinding wheels.
