The project seeks to combine the novel features of a variable-gap prism coupler that we have developed at QUB with a custom-built, Fourier transform spectrometer that was developed by Prof. Parker at the University of Essex. In addition to yielding a radical, new benchtop system, this arrangement will serveas a highly apposite test-bed for the incorporation of our Otto coupler rtechnology in the infrared beamline at Daresbury. to this end we will also perform some trail experiments at Daresbury using a simple Kretschmann prism coupler. In addition, the temperature and magnetic field regime 9 down to 2k and up to 7 T respectively ) of the lab- based system will be extended using an Oxford Instruments Spectromag-4 system.the purpose of these developemtns is to add spectral information on the infrared to the surface sensitivity f surface plasmon excitation for molecular detection ( Daresbury ) and for the examination of various materials including metal silicides, complex oxides ( exhibiting a metal-insulator transition ) and high - Tc superconductors. In many cases the surface enhancement of the spectroscopy will allow the sensing of features that are otherwise not detectable, thus giving scope for novel physics and chemistry. In addition, in longer term, the new instrumentation will facilitate the probing of a variety of surface electromagnetic excitations.
