Summary on Grant Application Form |
In the broadest sense this project is one that seeks to to take a comprehensive apporoach to supramolecular synthesis within a well defined, but versatile system. The aim is to develop from first principles a new strategy for supramolecular synthesis of an inorganic system and then apply this to synthesis of both infinite and discrete assemblies. The development phase involves the identification of intermolecular interactions of well-defined geometry that are preferred over competing arrangements. This will be accomplished by a combination of crystallographic database analysis and computational studies. Preliminary results in this area have been very promising and have enabled identification of new supramolecular synthons, N-H...X2M & N-H...X3M,that will provide the foundation for subsequent synthetic work. The devised synthetic strategy will beapplied in the design and synthesis of new crystalline materials based upon 1 D, 2D or 3D hydrogen-bonded networks constructed from a variety of cationic hydrogen bond donors coupled with perhalometallate ions as hydrogen bond acceptors. Subsequent efforts will employ the same overall strategy to the synthesis of discrete hydrogen-bonded polygons and polyhedra using suitably designed substituted halometallate anions.
