Summary on Grant Application Form
The large increase in demand for communication means is exerting increasing pressure upon available bandwidth. The proposed research is aimed at investigating the means of MMIC implementation of feedforward linearization of microwave power amplifiers leading to the potential production of high volume, miniaturized, low-cost units with improved efficiency. The sensitivity of loop imbalances will be investigated and methods of adaptive control will be studied. This will determine the limits of operation of the technique under varying environmental and operating conditions. The most suitable feedforward technique, for implementation in MMIC form, will be established. Methods of implementing the couplers in a feed forward system on a MMIC chip, for example using distributed FET amplifiers, will be determined. A suitable GaAs MMIC foundry process will be selected and a prototype 3-chip set will be produced. Depending upon the evaluation results from the 3-chip set, a single MMIC linearizer will be produced, incorporating as much control circuitry as is practical within the time scale and budget. Finally, the MMIC linearizer will be integrated with Ku-band and Ka-band SSPA for full evaluation of the feedforward linearized system.
