This is the follow up proposal to the preceeding EPSRC research project GR/K95932. The principal objective of this proposal is to improve understanding of the physical mechanisms of acceleration, turbulization and possible transition to detonation of expanding flame fronts, by means of numerical and analytical methods applied to appropriate models of flame dynamics. Knowledge of these mechanisms is the key to the prediction and, if required, prevention of the uncontrolled change in burning speed in piston engines, in atmospheric releases of hydro-carbon fuels, and in fire safety in tunnels and mines. The following problems associated with the novel aspects of the phenomena will be studied: the nature and dynamics of cracks and cells on the flame surface and their interaction with the overall surface structures formed by the hydrodynamic flame instability, acceleration of expanding spherical flames, and clarification of the limits of applicability of asymptotic models of the flame front dynamics in practice. The research will be based on numerical and analytical investigation of models of the phenomena in question found to be effective, and experimental data for relevant combustion systems.The results will be of fundamental interest to those involved in combustion and its applications to internal combustion engines, gas-air burners, fuel-air cloud explosions, and combustion in channels.
