Summary on Grant Application Form
We will investigate molecular flourescence as a basis for three-dimensional digital storage. AN array of DNA molecules assembled perpendicular to a substrate surface will act as a selective three-dimensional scaffold for flourescent molecules ( flourophores ) via specific Watson-Crick pairing. By loading the DNA scaffold locally on a micron-scale with different types and concentrations of flourophores, information will not only be encoded in the plane of the substrate, but also vertically in the third dimension creating multi-bit words on a micron-scale. The coded information will be read by scanning focussed lasers of wavelengths appropriate for excitation of the flourophores across the surface.
