Summary on Grant Application Form
The key aim of the project is to assess the feasibility of developing a viable composite that could be an alternative sustainable alternative to Rockwool, provide the possibility of a recycling or re-use route after a growing season, and provide a medium within which, in the future, sensing systems can be incorporated to provide greater control over the hydroponic growth process. This will invovle four main activites1 Development of optimised porous ceramic block materials from Pedite (and other) granules consolidated with a liquid silicate binder.2 Plant growth trials in prototype porous ceramics blocks3 Exploratory development of porous blocks based on Perlite with thermoplastic powder as the binder4 Recovery/re-use trials using porous blocks produced with both thermoplastic and liquid silicate binders.
