The friction of materials on snow and ice has wide scientific and technological importance, having applications in sports engineering (skis, skates) and vehicle traction. This proposal will initiate a systematic study of slider friction on ice directed towards designing engineered surfaces based on scientific understanding of the slider/ice interaction. This proposal links techniques that are used in biological sciences (low temperature scanning electron microscopy, LTSEM), mechanical engineering (frictional measurements) with materials characterisation, performance and processing. Friction experiments using slider materials (copper and Ti6Al-4V, with controlled surface roughnesses) on ice surfaces will be carried out. LTSEM will be used to characterise the ice structure and surface morphology; use of this novel technique will provide very good resolution and depth of field. LTSEM has never been used in ice friction studies before and offers a high likelihood of discovering new phenomena. Preliminary maps of frictional behaviour of sliders on ice and snow will be plotted to provide a comprehensive picture of slider behaviour across a range of conditions which can be used in materials design,
