The use of materials of sandwich composition in ship building is becoming increasingly common. To date, little theoretical modelling of the dynamic interaction between such materials and the surrounding water has been completed. This is an important issue, because the wave-bearing properties of the ship hull are closely-related to the transmission of noise and vibration to passengers, to noise radiation to the far field for detection purposes in military applications, and to the long-term performance of the vessel. We therefore propose to develop a hierarchy of models of the unsteady sandwich-plate motions which can exist under heavy fluid loading conditions. Particular aims will be to increase understanding of three-dimensional behaviour, and to study the development of large-amplitude nonlinear motions. At each stage, consistent models of the sandwich structure, including the interaction between the various plies, will be developed, which will then be analysed using a range of techniques from stability and nonlinear wave theory.
