Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposal addresses the need, which has been identified by the EPSRC, for a network in Process Risk and Loss Prevention. Whilst Process Safety is a recognised theme in the EPSRC Programme Landscapes 2000/01, funding levels have been relatively low. This is a consequence of both limited applications and poor success rates and is something the network should address through increased focus and awareness. The network membership comprises of academic, industrial and other organisations (such as the Institution of Chemical Engineers and the Health and Safety Executive). It will support the development and sharing of ideas and expertise in process risk and loss prevention between academia and companies across the process industries, allowing best practice and the latest research ideas to be shared for the benefit of the UK base. This is particularly relevant to the exploitation of research ideas and output into actual process operations in manufacturing. This will be achieved through visits, exchanges, thematic workshops, case studies and a website and newsletter. The output of the network will benefit both academic, industrial and organisational participants and, by virtue of enabling safer processes and manufacturing, society at large.
