Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal has been generated by collaborations between the School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences and the Department of Chemistry (De Montfort University) and the Pharmaceutical Sciences Research Institute (Aston University). lontophoresis offers a means of systemic or local delivery of charged drugs across the skin. Polymer electrolytes based on polyethylene oxide offer potential advantages for use in iontophoretic devices over conventional hydrogel systems. The proposed research seeks to achieve an understanding of the use of polyethylene oxide-based polymer electrolyte films for use in iontophoretic transdermal drug delivery. Formulation and casting techniques for films with optimum mechanical properties and drug release characteristics, across both a model membrane and the clinically-relevant system of excised human skin, will be developed. The research is at the pre-competitive stage and will provide the healthcare industry with the knowledge to develop new products with improved effectiveness and manufacturability. The co-operation and synergy between the investigators and their respective sites means that it will be possible to apply the fields of polymer electrolytes and drug delivery to the pharmaceutically and biologically-relevant problems of delivering drugs through the skin.
