Summary on Grant Application Form
The aliphatic polyamides (nylons) are a family of polymers of major commercial importantance that chain-fold in the semi-crystalline solid state. This large family extends from the polypeptides (nylon 2 or polyglycine) to polyethylene (nylon infinity). The subtle interplay between the nature and frequency of the folds and the directionally specific interchain hydrogen bonds controls their structure, texture, morphology, melting temperature and properties. During the tenure of a 3-year EPSRC grant (GR/L35027) that terminated on 31/12/2000 we discovered a tranche of new structures for nylons and new folding geometries with different chemistries. This study was able to provide an explanation for a series of reported conflicting notions reported previously for nylon polymers. As anticipated, careful investigation of nylons using these monodisperse nylon molecules enabled previously confusing data to be analysed with improved accuracy and the confusion eliminated. In the process of the original research investigation, a number of mew detailed structures were discovered and, as a consequence of new insights that eminated from the results, it became evident that the project boundaries expanded. Thus, in this new proposal we wish to capitalise on our discoveries to date, examine some crystallization procedures in more detail, and to fully investigate the effect on the crystal structure of mixed length oligoamides. We anticipate that these new experiments will provide an advanced understanding of polyamide crystallization and properties and offers the potential to discover the fundamental features of a new range of molecular blends for nylons.
