The Innovative Manufacturing Research Centre in e-Business at the University of Liverpool will pursue excellence in manufacturing systems and management research. The ambition of the Centre is to make a positive and significant contribution to manufacturing competitiveness by actively and rigorously researching the critical challenges faced now and in the future by UK manufacturing industry. The Centre will focus upon applications-based work that will not only involve observational and evaluative research approaches but is driven by a commitment to make full use of lifecycle R & D culminating in solutions design andsolutions prototyping and test. An overriding characteristic of the Centre will be the capability to harness Internet-based information technologies to propose and case-test solutions to manufacturing problems. The problems and challenges chosen to be addressed are:- Mass customisation- Responsivness- Operational excellence
