Summary on Grant Application Form
The primary goal of this multidisciplinary workshop is to advance the emerging field of self-assembly of peptide and protein systems, by bringing researchers together from various backgrounds that would have never met otherwise. This is the second workshop to cover such a broad spectrum of fields, including biology, chemistry, physics, protein science, polymer science, materials science, various engineering disciplines, and medical science, unified under a common theme. Biology is reaching the limit of what it can accomplish without the influence of other fields, especially computer science, engineering, and materials science, which bring new technologies, techniques and innovations to biology, allowing Biologists to approach previously unanswerable questions. Simultaneously, biomolecular self-assembly provides tremendous source of inspiration for the development of novel smart nanostructures and multifunctional materials with enormous potential for use in applications such as novel biomaterials for tissue engineering, drug delivery, personal care products and smart industrial fluids. This cross-disciplinary workshop will undoubtedly generate a great deal of novel ideas and unconventional collaborations, which may produce breakthrough insights into many unsolved problems in biology. It will also be an incubator for the development of new technologies with potentially valuable applications. This meeting will evolve into a regular multidisciplinary workshop every two years.
