The objective of the proposal is the development of ink-jet printing technology as a method of fabrication electronic components on an industrila scale. We will develop slurries and liquid precursors for ink-jet printing of conductor traces, insulators and passive electronic components on a range of substrates including: Alumina plates, steel plates coated with an insulating layer, and polyimide ( or similar) polymer sheet. We will develop CFD models of the ink-jet printing process to enable us to predict the printing parameters required to allow ink-jet printing of the dense, relatively viscous, suspesions needed for circuit manufacture. These models will also be used to predict printed track dimensions and process limitations, e.g. the onset of splashing. It is also important to understand the drying and firing processes required to produce dense coatings and multilayer constructions.To allow firing at low temperatures we intend to develop a range of liquid precursors. These may also have better fluid properties than the rheologically complex suspensions of solids ued up to now.
