The aim of VERTIGO is to demonstrate that through the integration of information extracted from data collected across different processing stages, using advanced data visualisation, process data mining and modelling tools, a significant reduction in the time taken for the transfer of a new or modified product to full-scale production, and assured manufacturing across multiple sites can be achieved. The scope for using data to improve process understanding is immense and thus the visualisation and analysis of data is becomingly increasingly important in today's competitive environment. Within the project, a wide range of data visualisation, process data mining and modelling tools (including mechanistic, empirical and hybrid modelling) will be explored for the extraction of information from the different stages of a process prior to the further development of novel tools, such as multi-block approaches, local models and meta-analysis, for the integration of information from different stages. In summary, the research challenges include (i) the extraction of information from diverse data forms (e.g. process, chemical and analytical) especially where data is sparse; (ii) the incorporation of dynamic (temporal) information into the data-mining tools; (iii) the integration of data from different stages; and (iv) the development of a framework for mapping process features from one stage to another. The techniques will be demonstrated on two contrasting industrial processes.
