Catalytic carbonylation reactions have attracted great interest in recent years since subtle modifications of the catalyst system and reaction conditions can lead to a range of products which are of great commercial interest. Such products include simple carboxylic acids, diacids, polyketones, unsaturated acids, lactones and Warns.This project involves the synthesis of a series of chiral ligands suitable for the completion of transition metals. The synthetic methodology followed allows several means of ligand modification and can allow systematic investigations into the relationship between the chemical structure and catalytic properties of various catalyst precursors. Particular interest will be shown for group 9 and 10 complexes, as suitable precursors for enantioselective carbonylation reactions.The ligand systems of interest are primarily bred upon the phosphinoethanethiol framework and are dived from chiral epobdes. The synthesis of chiral epoxades is based on good litereature precedence leading to a high confidence of success. The stertc and electronic properties of complexes derived from the proposed ligands are of paramount importance to catalysis since they govern the reaction's activity and selectivity. By systematically feeding back results from our measurements into our design we will improve the desired properties of these complexes.
