The research proposed here will address the key issues of generic importance to electromagnetic imaging such as the use of multi-frequency excitation to exploit skin depth variations with frequency, image reconstruction and inversion techniques optimised for eddy current imaging, and the 3D approaches suitable for complex geometries. The present state-of-the-art involves qualitative (not quantitative), 2D and single frequency imaging.The solution to these problems requires a concerted multi-disciplinary approach involving electronic instrumentation engineering (Lancaster), applied mathematics (UMIST) and process engineering (Corus and MPC). In order to ensure direct relevance, the research will focus on one case study, namely imaging of molten metal process. This application not only has generic importance to the metals industry, but also provides an excellent case study upon which to make a step change in the current state-of-the-art of electromagnetic imaging and help to unlock the real potential of the technology.The project will address the imaging molten metal flow profiles. In the continuous casting of steel for example, control of molten steel delivery through the pouring nozzle, between the tundish and the mould, is critical in order to ensure the stability of the meniscus and create the optimum laminar flow
