Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal is for a visiting fellowship for Prof M Field (Department of Mathematics, University of Houston) to visit work with the PI, Dr P Ashwin at the University of Exeter. Prof Field is an internationally recognised expert in dynamics with symmetry and his visit should allow progress on a number of projects of mutual interest, in particular the dynamics of heteroclinic networks. In dynamical systems with no symmetry, it is conjectured that typical systems have a finite number of attractors, and all of these are ergodic in that asymptotic averages of observations converge and depend only on the attractor chosen. It has been recognised for some time now that this picture is not true in the presence of symmetries; there can be attractors that are not ergodic. We aim to elucidate the structure of a class of such attractors (heteroclinic networks) by a mathematical study of model examples and generic theory. These attractors have been seen in a range of applications and are responsible for certain forms of complex spatio-temporal intermittent behaviour seen in models and numerical simulations.
