Summary on Grant Application Form
Funds are requested to set a up -state-of-the-art single crystal X-ray diffraction facility for major research initiatives requiring structure elucidation of large multi-component self-assembled systems down to high resolution charge density determination for small molecules. Selected projects include: (i) The confinement of space by the assemble of molecule capsules with large internal volumes using nano-meter size container or bowl shaped anionic molecules in conjunction with terpyridyls, metal ions and crown ether and related cryptand. (ii) 'Nano-sphere' chemistry based on icosahedral arylgalloxane species or a core of other metal oxides surrounded by a sheath of arylgallium(IIn units. (iii) Molecular recognition and confinement of nano-meter size globular molecules such as fullerenes, carboranes and boranes using saddle shaped macrocycles and cavitands. (iv) Crystal engineering of super anion boranes, borane adducts, and related species as a paradigm in the synthesis of new materials. (v) Charge density studies on model small molecule compounds for (i) - (iv) for a detailed analysis and understanding of the forces involved in the novel supramolecular chemistry. These programmes are important in materials chemistry leading into nano-technology and benign chemical processes, drug delivery, ceramic precursors, nano-scale molecular flasks, separation science, device technology, and more.
