Improved catalyst design can lead to improvements in overall performance, more ifficient manufacture and in limiting the environmental impact of exisiting chemical processes. It is proposed to develop a novel model for porous media which will aid in understanding physical processes occuring within catalysts, and thereby improbe fundamental design principles. The 36 month project will involve the novel use if synergistic combination of characterisation techniques, such as MRI, nitrogen sorptio, mercury porosimetry and diffusion methods, to understand the nature of porous structures. The project will develop a methodology to a sucessfully intergrate the information obtained from these different methods to provde a unified description of the void space structure of porous media. The resulting model will be used to study the physical processes occuring during gas phase diffusion, particulary the poorly-understood phenomenon of surface diffusion. The project is suitable for the training of a student in research methodss. The proposed projects relates to the fundamentals of understanding porous media including rocks, also the programme on Oil and Gas extraction.
