Summary on Grant Application Form
Our experiment at Sussex to measure the permanent electric dipole moment of the electron has just reached the point where significant data can be collected. However, in October 2001 there will be a sudden drop in the personnel to run the experiment when Dr Sauer's Advanced Fellowship comes to an end and our exceptionally talented doctoral student submits his D. Phil. This student has played a central role in bringing the experiment to the point where a world-leading result can be obtained. This proposal asks for EPSRC funds to maintain experimental continuity by supporting him in a 2 year postdoctoral position. This research promises to yield new information about the electric dipole moment of the electron, a quantity of central importance in understanding the basic laws of elementary particles and the early universe.
