A new centre for Nanoscale Analytical Science is to be established at the University of Sheffield which will bring together the resources and skills from research groups in the Departments of Chemistry, Physics and Astronomy, Chemical and Process Engineering, Electronic and Electrical Engineering, Engineering Materials, and Molecular Biology and Biotechnology. The centre will embed world class analytical science and technology in the heart of science and engineering at the university from its base in the Department of Chemistry. It will provide an interface between the academic groups and two classes of industrial organisation. These are major high technology 'end user' companies, who confront important and unresolved analytical issues on the nanoscale and also 'provider' companies who are leading suppliers of advanced analytical instrumentation. The provider companies involved possess a set of complementary instrument technologies which when combined in novel ways have the potential to address a very wide range of nanoscale analytical problems. The centre will be managed on the basis of an active steering committee comprising university researchers and company representatives. The centre will add to this core research activity a public information and teaching dimension, at both undergraduate and postgraduate level, which will communicate to a wider audience the excitement of solving problems on this extraordinary and challenging length scale.
