|
In discussions with leading business managers in the UK, a need has been identified in the UK for a Master's level training package in Environmental Life Cycle Management (LCM) leading to a recognized qualification. The University of Surrey is ideally placed to develop and offer such a course, given the international reputation of the Centre for Environmental Strategy for research and teaching on Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) over the last eight years. The training package will consist of three stages. At Stage I, participants will take part in a three-day intensive training course to learn about the role of LCM in delivering sustainability. At Stage II, participants will be divided into industry-based specialist groups; each participant will undertake an in-depth LCA of a product or process relevant to their workplace. At Stage III, the studies will be presented at a 'Learning Through Doing' seminar. The emphasis will be upon learning through practical 'hands-on' studies and interactive discussion among participants, indepth exploration of the industry-specific implications of LCM, and use of distance learning materials. As well as developing LCM expertise among the participants. these three stages will also build a peer group, and this network will continue to provide a supportive role beyond the formal end of the training package.
