Informatics is the study of information science, technology and systems. It is a cross-disciplinary activity developing powerful computational resources and specialist expertise to enable sophisticated computational modelling and visualisation, and the curatorship of large volumes of data. Informatics skills are increasingly important in our information-driven society. The aim of the planned MSc is to produce informatics graduates who combine solid theoretical knowledge with practical research experience, and are capable of leading multi-disciplinary research and development teams. This aim will be achieved by first training students in core informatics skills, then enabling them to specialise in a domain-specific stream, e.g., biochemistry or geography, before setting them a research project relevant to their specialisation. The course is thus inherently multi-disciplinary, and will involve the participation of several Schools at the University of Leeds. Multi-disciplinary endeavours are always challenging, but the advantage in this case will be the identification and solution of generic informatics problems across multiple domains. This is in contrast to the current UK provision of informatics training, which is typically confined to a single discipline.The MSc will be modular in design, to allow both full-time and part-time learning, as well as the use of single modules for continuing professional development. Once the course is established, modules will be converted to an online form to enable distance learning.The MSc is relevant to the following EPSRC priority themes: engineering and physical sciences for the post-genomic era, grid technologies, knowledge management, and systems-level technologies.
