The course offers training in state-of-the-art physical chemical techniques for the analysis of biological molecules, with a specific focus on proteomics and other aspects of post-genome science. Core modules in Separations Science, Analytical Chemistry, NMR spectroscopy and X-Ray Crystallography, Mass Spectrometry for Protein and Peptide Analysis, and Bioinformatics, are complemented by elective modules in Protein Chemistry, Genomics, Bioanalytical and Biomedical Science, Biosensors, and Array Technologies. Transferable skills training will be provided formally with core modules in Research Methodology, and Enterprise, as well as by integrated requirements for presentations, written work, and literature and laboratory research, and consolidated during the research project that culminates in the presentation of a dissertation. The research project will be carried out either in the three participating departments at UMIST or within an industrial environment. Fundin is requested for both standard 1 ear fulltime studentships over the first five years, plus costs for the development of web-based teaching material for distance-learning and inhouse use in both modular and flexible learning packages. Industrial support and involvement is central to all aspects of the course.
