Summary on Grant Application Form
The aim of this project is to extend ideas of image-based rendering to video sequences. In contrast to most techniques, we will follow an approach based on interpolation techniques. Namely, rather than obtaining a 3D description of a scene, we will synthesise views by modelling changes in the 2D-image plane. The main advantage of this approach is that it is significantly simpler. The main disadvantage is that it does not allow 3D-object manipulation, but it is limited to virtual view generation. In spite of this limitation, interpolation is a suitable approach to practical applications in image-based rendering and it can provide a practical solution to interactive video displaying. This has many potential applications in interactive displaying and multimedia technology. The project will develop and implement techniques for analysis and visualisation aimed at displaying a moving scene from different points of view. The project will focus on one application: it will consider the generation and visualisation of multiple-view video streaming. The main aim is to be able to interactively control the view angle of a video. It will investigate the potential of this technology to visualise 3D scenes.
