Refrigeration is used in virtually all aspects of the food manufacture and supply industry, the chemical industry and the built environment. Refrigeration hasconsiderable environmental impacts not only through its significant energy consumption and its indirect contribution to global warming, but also due to directemissions of refrigerants to the atmosphere, the energy used in the manufacture of materials and components, and impacts arising from end of The aim of this project s to improve the sustainability of food refrigeration through the development of model-based design and environmental impactassessment methodologies. The target will be to develop techniques for the design of refrigerated display and storage cabinets to achieve in use energysavings in excess of 50% compared to current state of the art technology, and improve environmental performance through the appropriate choice of materialsand assembly techniques to facilitate recycling. The energy savings will lead to both economic and environmental benefits through the reduction of fossit fueluse and C02 emissions to the atmosphere. Social benefits will arise from the improvement of the thermal, environment in retaitfood premises, theimprovement in product quality and shelf rife, and the creation of employment opportunities through the manufacture of new and highly efficient cabinets for theUK and export markets.
