Summary on Grant Application Form
The project will develop an alternative sustaiable technology for the electrodeposition of chromium from Cr(III) containing ionic liquids circumventing the use of chromic acid based systems. The project will investigate not only the effect of the ionic liquid composition and electroplating conditions upon the deposit morphology, but also develop methodologies for metal pre-treatment which are compatible with ionic liquids. Close liaison between the University of Leicester and the industrial partners will lead to the construction of a pilot scale plant which can assess the feasibility of this new technology for industrial samples. Mechanical and corrosion testing will be carried out in combination with surface analysis to elucidate the deposition mechanism and the effect that this has upon surface morphology.
