Deformation analysis is an essential part of the geotechnical design process. This is to ensure that deformation occurring in soil structures is sufficiently small so that it does not cause damage to its upper and surrounding structures. Over the last 15 years considerable progress has been made in the development of accurate models for describing elastic deformation of granular materials. However a complete deformation analysis requires accurate prediction of both elastic and plastic deformations of soils under general loading conditions. It is therefore very timely that concerted efforts are devoted to the development of better understanding of plastic deformation of soils. This project aims to develop an accurate numerical model for predicting plastic deformation and flow of granular materials using double-shearing theory. A stumbling block of widely using the double-shearing theory in the past has been lack of a general procedure for its implementation in finite element analysis. This study proposes to remove this obstacle by developing a general numerical procedure for performing deformation analysis of granular materials using the double-shearing constitutive equations. A direct comparison will also be made between the solutions obtained from double-shearing theory and those from the conventional plastic potential theory.
