The annotation and searching of video data is a key requirement of digital broadcasting and similar applications. Current methods are not sufficientlypowerful or robust to allow full automation of these functions. The proposed research is aimed at providing automated tools, based on a powerful,concise image representation using Gaussian mixture modelling of both spatial and intensity co-ordinates. The main features of the new model, whichdistinguish it from earlier mixture models are:1. It is capable of representing data statistically to a prescribed level of accuracy.2. It contains both a statistical and spatial element, so that it can model spatial shape.3. It deals efficiently with the effects of motion, due to the closure of the Gaussian functions under affine motions.4. It can be easily adapted to represent colour, texture or other image features.5. It uses a tree structured model, making computation efficient and allowing a trade-off between accuracy and data volume, which is essential for efficient searching.6. It lends itself to Maximum a Posteriori estimation techniques, which are the most powerful inference methods currently in use. This combination of features is unique and makes the MGM approach a viable alternative to techniques based on histogramming.
