Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal is for a Visiting Fellowship to conduct a programme of research over a period of 12 man months in the field of fibre optic instrumentation. Specifically, it concentrates on the furtherance of new ideas on fibre optic Bragg grating-based intrinsic sensor systems, in particular exploiting a range of gratings fabricated on special types of fibres, building upon previous research at City and other Centres. The programme will support the strengthening of links with China via a period of research in the UK, at City University, of an academic from one of the rapidly expanding Chinese Universities. The application is, somewhat unusually, for support of a more junior academic than is often the situation with such fellowships but the case is made on the basis of the expertise and experience that he offers to the project. The aim is for mutual benefits - to City University the opportunity to reinforce collaboration with someone experienced in the field, yet active in research and likely to be so for some considerable period after the end of the Fellowship and for the Fellow access to the facilities at City and a close interaction with the community of researchers there, with their experience, and more broadly in the UK. Thus a valuable synergy of the activity of the two groups is anticipated, in an important and topical programme in intrinsic fibre optic temperature and strain sensing.
