Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed work will examine transport and structure in two and three-dimensional granular beds. Use will be made of three facilities currently available to our group and our collaborators.A high resolution camera will allow investigation of the development of structure and its propagation in tow-dimensionsl vibro-fluidised beds. In combination with a high speed digital camera able to view at framing rates up to 12000 frames per second, this will enable the dynamics and reorganisation processes involved in consolidation processes to be examined at the single particle level. The high speed digital camera will also be used to examine the behaviour of the grains on timescales of the order of the collision times. Finally, a study of self-and mutual-diffusion will be undertaken in three dimensionsl beds using positron emission particle tracking. This will mark a significant step change in our understanding of granular materials at the single particle level; to date, the only vibro-fluidised systems investigated in 3-D have been mono-disperse and these experiments will represent the first validation of kinetic theory methods for three-dimensional binary fluidised granular beds.
