The problems of friction and wear in microactuators in general and microturbines in particular is a limitation to the development of practical systems. The limitations in fabrication techniques and the minute clearances between components result in conventional bearing and lubrication not being directly applicable to micro devices. Modelling work conducted at Heriot Watt University has demonstrated that a suitable rotor and stator configuration can result in fluid levitation of the rotor, effectively creating a fluid bearing. One of the primary aims of the proposed research is to build a series of test vehicles to validate the results of the simulation. In addition further more advanced designs are envisaged which would widen the scope of operation of the fluid bearing design. It is planned to model these configurations and then fabricate the most promising designs, followed by further laboratory testing.
