The purpose of this programme is to evaluate and demonstrate the use of dislocation engineering to produce efficient optical emitters in silicon and associated materials. To do this we will optimise and and characterise our current types of device structures using our existing dislocaton engineered devices and also conventional III-V devices for benchmarking. In addition the use of this approach in other semiconductor materials and in silicon deliberately doped with extrinsic radiaitive centres will be studied and characterised. Finally the potential of the various device routes described will be evaluated for their potential as the basis of a silicon injection laser.
