Summary on Grant Application Form
To construct algebraic surfaces beyond those known to Enriques in the 1930's has proved a difficult task, and cheap results are not expected. However, this study has been extraordinarily fruitful in pointing the way to methods in commutative algebra and 3-folds. One of the most significant achievemnts was Rebecca Barlow's 1983 construction of a simply connected Godeaux surface. It is still an open question to know if the moduli of these surfaces is connected, or if several other constructions are claimed in the literature work as stated and are simply connected. Now that problems and background results in 3-folds are coming more into focus, we expect to be able to derive some benefit in the other direction, for example, obtaining new surfaces as sections of Fano or Calabi-Yau 3-folds.
