Summary on Grant Application Form
This proposal is directed at supporting growth of research effort in problem-driven mathematics within the UK. The fellowship will be held by Dr Mark McGuinness who is a leading applied mathematician from New Zealand and will involve significant interaction with three different university groups and shorter visits to other applied mathematics departments. The aim of this fellowship proposal is to thereby enable and foster greater interaction between UK applied mathematicians and the corresponding community in New Zealand. Dr McGuinness will bring expertise in a wide variety of modelling problems including reaction-diffusion in coal, fluid flow in geothermal systems, and the interaction between the cardio-vascular and respiratory systems. In addition to these specific problem-driven research topics there will be the opportunity for strategic discussions on topics including methods for facilitating collaborative research between academic mathematicians and both industrialists and academics in other disciplines. Keywords: coal volatilisation, cardiac and respiratory physiology, tumour growth, sea ice, nonlinear diffusion.
