Summary on Grant Application Form
The Jefferson Laboratories Free Electron Laser (JLFEL) is a unique light source which has just started to operate. We have been offered access to the machine in its last two operational periods in 2001 in July/August and October/November. After this the machine will shut down for approximately one year for an extensive upgrade. We have two experiments which would greatly benefit from using JLFEL Firstly glasses in the Ga-La-S-O-(F) system are of great telecommunications interest, but fibres made from them are high loss. It is not known if this is a fundamental loss from the bulk glass, or fibre processing induced. Measurement of extremely low losses in bulk is notoriously difficult. The JLFEL offers the possibility of simple, direct calorimetric measurements at the relevant wavelengths. No other source to our knowledge can offer multi hundred watt output tunable across the near-IR.For laser ablation, the problem of particulate depostion when using excimer pulses is notorious and, after intial enthusiasm, has inhibited uptake of the technique. JLFEL uniquely offers high average power in picosecond pulses; then: are indications this reduces particulate contamination. These will be brief, preliminary scoping experiments to assess the potential of the JLFEL in this application. We also wish to explore the potential of a longer term collaboration with JLFEL.
