Summary on Grant Application Form
The grant is to invite Mr Andrew Charleson, Director of the Earthquake Hazard Centre of the University of Wellington New Zealand, to stay in our Department for a month and collaborate to the project on Evaluation of code provision for seismic strengthening of concrete and masonry structures. During the visit of mr Charleson it is proposed to carry out the following activities, as a pilot study: From the database of damaged buildings collected during reconnaissance visits in Turkey, India, Italy, other....., choose one typical concrete building and one typical masonry building , study in detail what strengthening procedures are suggested by the codes. Identify the defects that codes intend to remedy and correlate this with the damage patterns surveyed on similar failed and/or collapsed buildings. Compare codified basic modelling assumptions of the structures with the construction details surveyed in situ;. Alter the assumption as necessary into the modelling and verify effectiveness of proposed interventions;. Propose alternative interventions, if relevant. For concrete structures a computer program developed by Mr Andrew Charleson, RESIST, will be used. For masonry structures a computer program developed by Dr Dina D'Ayala, TOSQA99, will be used.
