Advanced oxidation processes (AOP's) are treatment technologies, which can be used to reduce the environmental and health impacts of recalcitrant industrial wastes. The development of on-line instruments and control strategies are required to maintain the efficiency and cost effectiveness of AOP's when operated on effluents with varying composition and organic load, as typically found in industrial scenarios e.g. textile wastewaters. Two key operating parameters have been identified for the efficient operation of AOP, hydrogen peroxide concentration and oxidisable load. In the proposal two novel instruments, which are capable of measuring hydrogen peroxide levels and the amount of oxidisable load will be developed and tested. A UV/peroxide (Fenton) membrane reactor will be constructed to treat textile waste effluent. Experiments will be performed in which the load and composition of textile waste varies to determine the performance envelope of the AOP. A control strategy using these two instruments to optimise the operation of the novel membranebased AOP by maintaining the optimum ratio of H202/organic load will be evaluated. This work extends previous collaboration with two UK companies supplying instruments and reagents for environmental applications and European collaborators on AOP systems.
