Summary on Grant Application Form
In this project we will devise a reproducible and reliable method for the fabrication of single-walled carbon nanotube (SWNT) probe tips with effective tip diameters below 1 nm at high yields to perform nanometer-scale imaging of mesoporous nanostructured materials by scanning probe microscopies (SPM)such as STM and AM The SWNT tips will be characterized by TEM and SEM and their performance will be evaluated in STM and AFM studies by imaging the nanopore structures of electrodeposited mesoporous platinum and selenium films prepared from liquid crystal templates. The performance of the SWN tipswill be further assessed by imaging the liquid crystal surfactant aggregates at electrode surfaces using tapping-mode AM The ability to perform structural characterization studies down to a nanometer-scale by SPM is an essential prerequisite for any future realization of applications based on nanostructured materials as such investigations are crucial to establish their structure-property relations which will be the focus of future studies we intend to conduct.
