Summary on Grant Application Form
Many experimental studies have investigated navigation in large-scale VEs such as virtual buildings. A unifying finding is that although people develop spatial knowledge much more slowly than in the real world, the ultimate accuracy of people's knowledge is similar in both types of setting. Recent research by the applicant has shown that people also experience substantial navigational difficulties in VEs that are relatively small (e.g., 10 x 10 m) but cluttered (they contain obstacles to movement). The overall goal of the present project is to understand the causes of disorientation that people experience in cluttered VEs, and determine attributes of interaction and environment design that can be used to overcome these difficulties. The attributes to be investigated are: (i) an environment's visual characteristics (e.g., the variation in geometry, colour and lighting), (ii) the field of view, and (iii) the mechanism people use to move around (the movement interface). The result will be a detailed understanding of the causes of this navigational disorientation, and identification of attribute thresholds that will help improve the usability of future VE systems.
