Summary on Grant Application Form
The research proposed will extend structural shape annealing, a proven method for computational synthesis of conventional and innovative discrete structures, to generation of three-dimensional truss structures. This work will be based on the current methodology and representation used to generate purposeful planar trusses, single-layer domes and transmission towers. Two additional structural shape grammars will be developed and implemented for systems of planar trusses and one-way space trusses. These advances will be validated using abstract test problems and a full-scale case study to illustrate potential benefit to the AEC community. The finidngs will be disseminated through incorporation of the developed structural shape grammars within eifForm, a prototype system based on structural shape annealing, for experimental use in education and practice.
