Summary on Grant Application Form
The main aim of this project will to be to bridge the gap between data on the crystallization of oligomers and polymers using compounds that are capable of folding many more times than the alkanes used in most work to date.We will establish the conditions under which crystals of R-3-Hydroxbutyrate oligomers of up to 96 repeats can be reproducibly grown with well defined numbers of folds (up to as many as 12 folds per molecule) and to note any rate minima that occur as growth changes from one folded form to another. We will also observe morphologies of the different folded crystals and thus lay the basis for a more detailed study of chiral crystals; such a study would benefit from synthesis of the S enantiomorph of the oligomers which we will attempt if time permits. Finally, we hope to initiate a new line of investigation in which ofgomers are used as model materials for studies of surface modification.
