Summary on Grant Application Form
Linear and nonlinear optical and magneto-optical (MO) phenomena will be used to study nanoscale (sub-monolayer and monolayer) magnetic systems. Dynamic, in situ, linear MO at oblique incidence in the longitudinal and polar orientations, will be combined with ex situ surface/interface sensitive second harmonic magneto-optic observations using a Ti-sapphire, femtosecond, laser. The objective is to correlate between the comprehensive data and evaluate a newly-conceived method of characterising monolayer magnetic systems in terms of single-surface, linear and nonlinear susceptibility tensors. It is hoped to provide a methodology for the interpretation and quantitative description of the magnetic and MO-behaviour of commercially important ultrathin magnetic layers.
