Summary on Grant Application Form
Describe the proposed research in about 200 words. This is a proposal to study the cascade of Alfven (and slow) waves in MHD turbulence. This is a very basic kind of plasma turbulence yet there is still little agreement about the turbulent dynamics. High performance computing will be used to simulate the cascade and extract physical understanding. We will extend the physical model beyond MHD to include important physical effects such as the ion parallel viscosity and Hall effect. This will allow us to investigate the damping of slow waves and Alfven waves. The transition from tangled field to interacting waves at large scales will be studied. It is known from our previous work that structures appear in the cascade - particularly current sheets -these modify the cascade power law. We seek a quantitative understanding of these structures.
