Chlorinated hydrocarbon solvents such as TCE are the most widespread organic pollutants of groundwater. Permeable reactive barriers using zero-valent iron (Fe) are the favoured technology to destroy dissolved CHSs, but current designs are not suitable for fractured bedrock aquifers. A possibility would be to use fracking techniques (high pressure water/sand injection) to expand fractures and inject Fe into them, forming an extended reactive zone. The project is a laboratory study to develop the design parameters for a field trial of this technique. A range of flow through experiments will be conducted in an artificial fracture in Chalk, contained in a laboratory apparatus which allows monitoring of flow rates, permeability changes, influent and effluent chemistry, in-fracture chemistry. The results will be modelled with a comprehensive analytical solution to reactive transport in fractured rocks, and used to design a subsequent field trial.
