The underlying theme of this programme is the hybridisation and exploitation of dense-wavelength and time-division multiplexing where femtosecond laser pulses provide large spectral bandwidth and the necessary optical digits. It is thus logical to describe the principal components of the project in terms of (i) signal generation and regeneration, (ii) ultrafast routing and switching, and (iii) subsystem/system concepts. By placing emphasis on novel materials, devices and system designs we will seek to exploit a range of challenging and cutting-edge research that includes the topics of quantum dots, spintronics, photonic bandgaps and light-emitting organic materials. This IRC proposal is intended to break the mould of incremental developments and to advance a brand of revolutionary scientific and technical thinking that has the potential to lead to a new generation of datacomms technologies up to 100Tbit/s. From within this vision of the future we believe that we have configured a programme of research which will combine originality and flair with feasibility and a potential for both practicality and cost-effectiveness. The research described here is therefore intended to be adventurous and blue-sky with the expectation in mind that subsequent technologies will be developed on a ten-year timescale or so
