Summary on Grant Application Form
The proposed research explores a new strategy for the synthesis of hollow nanosperes 2-50 nm in diameter. The strategy is based on using Aunanoprticles as templates and thiolated oligomers as building blocks. Our method relies on the simulataneous oxidation of the Au template and formation of multiple S-S bridges which allows one-step synthesis of nanocapsules. We have just published preliminary results which confirm the feasibility of this method. We will expand this new method to synthesise and characterise a range of nanocapsules of diffrent sizes. Functionalisation of the external surface will allow us to tune their solubility and polarity. For instance, capsules perpared from mercaptomethyl styrene/styrene sufonate co-polymers, would have a hydrophilic exterior created by sulfonate groups, and hydrophobic interior dominated by S-S bonds. We will explore the host-guest properties of nanocapsules. Particular attention will be paid to the use of pyrene probes and other dyes to study the permeability of the capsule walls. Disproportionation of S-S bonds, leading to the destruction of capsules, will be studied as a means of controlled reselase of encapsulated guests.
